American Legion Restores Monument

WRC Monument – Precinct Cemetery

Our local American Legion Post recently took on the project of having the Civil War monument in Precinct Cemetery repaired and reconditioned.  The monument was erected by the Women’s Relief Corps in 1896 “In Memory of Our Unreturned Soldiers.”  It is located in the center of the military circle on the west side of the cemetery.  The Legion discovered that the large ball on the top had actually rotated over the years!  After a little investigation they found an article that was featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not (1929) that documented the same mysterious rotation in a similar stone in Marion, Ohio.

The Earlville Community Historical Society will also be working with the Precinct Cemetery Board in the spring to revitalize the entrance to the cemetery.
